West Central sits along the north bank of the Spokane River, just northwest of downtown, bordered by Indiana Avenue to the north, Riverside to the south, Monroe Street to the east, and the river itself to the west. Most of its residential core falls within Nettleton’s Addition, originally platted in 1887, making it one of the oldest planned residential areas in the city. The historic district covers 236 acres and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. It’s also the largest historic district on the Washington State Heritage Register.

Doyle’s Ice Cream Parlor, a neighborhood fixture since 1939, has been serving the same streets since well before most of the rest of the city existed in its current form.
