A Plateau With Nearly a Thousand Years of Documented History
Five Mile Prairie sits atop a roughly 3,400-acre basalt mesa north of the Spokane River, bounded by bluffs on nearly every side and rising several hundred feet above the surrounding lowlands. The Spokane Tribe called it Billymeechum, meaning home of the tall grass, and petroglyphs on the surrounding rock cliffs document their presence in the area as far back as the year 1010. The first non-Native settler, a homesteader named J.F. Strong, built a house on the prairie in 1879. The Strong House still stands today, one of the earliest and best-preserved homes in the area, and it’s listed on the Spokane Register of Historic Places.
By the early 1900s, Five Mile Prairie had become one of Spokane’s key agricultural areas, valued specifically because the fertile plateau needed no irrigation, and known for apple orchards, berry fields, and grain farms. The Five Mile Prairie Grange Hall, originally an apple-packing plant, still serves as a community gathering space today. Real development has come more recently. Housing has mostly replaced the remaining rural land here since the start of the 21st century, and the neighborhood is split administratively too, roughly half sits inside Spokane city limits, the other half in unincorporated Spokane County, and the area is served by the Mead School District rather than Spokane Public Schools.
Why Five Mile Prairie’s Pipes Are Different
This is a neighborhood with two genuinely different pipe stories sitting side by side. The handful of remaining original farmsteads, some dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s agricultural era, may still have older well or septic infrastructure well outside the norms of a standard residential sewer lateral. The much larger share of Five Mile Prairie’s housing, though, is recent subdivision construction from the past two decades or so, meaning modern PVC and none of the century-old clay tile issues common in Spokane’s older, denser neighborhoods.
