Drain Cleaning & Sewer Service in Airway Heights, WA
Airway Heights was built to house Fairchild Air Force Base personnel starting in the early 1940s. That means genuinely older housing stock next to a rapidly growing modern city. Camera inspection tells us which one we’re dealing with.
A Town Built to House an Air Base
Airway Heights exists because of the airfield next door. In 1942, Carl and Flora Lundstrom purchased land on the West Plains near what was then called the Galena Air Depot, later renamed Fairchild Air Force Base, at six dollars an acre, specifically to build housing for base personnel and workers. Depot officials had identified a real need for local housing, and the Lundstroms platted the land and started selling parcels that same spring. By 1946, as the war wound down, three subdivisions had been filed: the Airway Heights Addition, First Addition, and Second Addition, forming the residential core of what would become the city.
Incorporation came less than a decade later. On April 15, 1955, after a $5 filing fee and a 50 to 8 vote, one square mile officially became the City of Airway Heights, with 412 residents. Carl Lundstrom served as the town’s first mayor. The city sits between Fairchild Air Force Base to the west and Spokane International Airport to the east, a location that’s shaped its development from the very beginning.
Why Airway Heights’ Pipes Are Different
Airway Heights’ oldest housing dates specifically to the 1940s, built quickly to house wartime and postwar air base personnel, which puts it in a genuinely distinct pipe-era category. It’s older than Spokane Valley’s 1950s postwar boom but newer than the pre-1940s clay tile common on Spokane’s South Hill or in West Central. Original 1940s construction here is more likely to be running on cast iron or early Orangeburg fiber pipe, depending on exactly when a given section was built, while the city’s more recent growth around the casino and airport corridor has added considerably newer construction on top of that older core.
